Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology at NNI provides tests to measure brain functions such as reading, memory and problem-solving skills (neuropsychological tests). Rehabilitation and counselling is also offered to support patients with neurological conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and headaches, as well as patients who require post-neurosurgical recovery from conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, brain tumours and stroke. Our team strives to provide quality neuroscience care to engage and empower patients in the management of their physical health, cognitive functioning, and emotional well-being. We adopt a person-centered approach to care and provide a range of services.

 Our services include:

1. Neuropsychological Assessment
The assessment evaluates an individual's cognitive, emotional and psychological functioning. A series of standardised tests and procedures are given to measure how well different areas of the brain are working, and how brain functions may affect one’s behaviour, emotions and ability to go about daily activities. The results help guide treatment plans for cognitive rehabilitation.

2. Cognitive Enhancement Programme
An individualised plan is designed for each patient under the Cognitive Enhancement Programme, to help one regain skills that have been lost after a brain damage (e.g. stroke or traumatic brain injury), provide strategies to support cognitive function for patients with neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. dementia), as well as overall well-being and mental health management.

3. Genetic Counselling
Genetic counselling may be useful for those who are considering genetic testing, been diagnosed with a genetic disorder, or at risk of developing a genetic disorder. Individuals and their families are given support and information regarding their condition and genetic risks, to help them make informed decisions about their health and genetic testing options. A session with a genetic counsellor typically includes taking of family history, risk assessment, education, emotional and decision-making support, and referrals to relevant resources as needed.

4. Neuropalliative Psychological Service
This service provides psychological support for individuals diagnosed with neurological conditions and focuses more on quality of life rather than curative treatment. It aims to equip patients and their family members with skills to manage their emotions and cope with challenges that come with the illness.

5. Group Cognitive Stimulation Programme
The Group Cognitive Stimulation Programme aims to manage the anxiety levels of individuals, through group-based social activities. Patients will have opportunities to apply what they have learnt in the classroom in a real-world setting, by volunteering at partner organisations. Topics introduced in the interactive classroom segment include pointers for brain health, strategies to cope with cognitive changes e.g. memory and stress and emotional regulation techniques. This collaboration provides meaningful engagement through various volunteering opportunities.

Interested patients and caregivers can approach their NNI doctors or nurses. A team member will then be in contact to provide more information and make the necessary appointment.
