Cytarabine

Early side effects

• Cytarabine may cause a reaction 6 to 12 hours after it has been given. Signs of a reaction may include:
• High temperature of chills
• Rash
• Red watery eyes with pain (conjunctivitis)
  You may be given eyedrops to prevent conjuctivitis. If you are, use it as directed.
• Chest pain, muscle ache, bone pain, fatigue

            (Please seek medical attention if you experience the above symptoms.)

• Mild nausea, vomiting or appetite loss may be experienced.
  There are medications available, which may prevent or decrease these side effects. If you are given these medications, take them as directed.
• Transient headache or fever may occur (if cytarabine is received intrathecally.)

Delayed side effects

• A drop in your white blood cell count is expected after treatment.
• Mouth ulcers may occur.
• Diarrhea or abdominal pain may occur.
• Temporary hair thinning or hair loss may occur. Hair loss may be complete if receiving high-dose treatment.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

• Fever of 38° C or higher.
• Unusual bruising or bleeding, black sticky stools, dark urine or vomiting of blood.
• Severe shortness of breath or breathing difficulty or persistent cough.
• Severe diarrhea (>4 episodes a day) with abdominal pain.
• Severe skin rashes or painful mouth ulcers.
• Red watery eyes with pain or vision changes.
• Urinary retention.
