After suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Mr Ooi Lin Kah sought treatment at NNI and decided to become a brain donor with the Brain Bank Singapore (BBS). The BBS was formally established in 2019, and there are currently 218 registered brain donors, of which four have completed the donation process. Dr Yeo Tianrong, Deputy Director, BBS, and Senior Consultant, Department of Neurology, NNI shared that there is still much we do not know about the brain because it cannot be studied safely in sufficient detail while it is alive. In order for the Brain Bank to collect sufficient number of post-mortem brains to conduct meaningful research studies and findings, BBS hopes for at least 1,000 pledged brain donors in this national registry.
