For 25 years, the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) has been dedicated to improving the lives of patients with neurological disorders, innovation and training the next generation of neuroscience leaders.
As we celebrate NNI’s 25th Anniversary this year, we reflect on our achievements, honour our pioneers, and look forward to many more years of advancing neuroscience care for our patients and their families. Explore the achievements and aspirations that have shaped NNI into the institution it is today.
The NNI 25th Anniversary logo features a continuous ‘25’ joined together by seven circles.
The seven circles and the connectedness allude to the close partnership that NNI has with the seven hospitals we operate out of, and how we are One in the ecosystem.
Celebratory baubles surround the ‘25’ to form the online of a brain. Each bauble within the brain represents a SingHealth institution and her corporate colour. The differently sized baubles and the colours reflect the dynamism and the vibrancy of the SingHealth spirit.
Connecting all the dots are lines akin to neural pathways in the brain. Together with internal and external stakeholders, NNI is creating connections and shaping the future of neuroscience – the tagline for our 25th Anniversary.
1999
NNI was established as a National Specialty Centre, and Singapore’s first Neuroradiology Department.
2000
The Neuroscience Laboratory was set up.
2001
NNI integrated neuroscience services with Singapore General Hospital.
2002
Southeast Asia’s first Tesla MRI was built in NNI’s Neuroradiology Department for detailed scans.
2004
NNI joined Singapore Health Services cluster to bring neuroscience care closer to the community.
2005
The Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Centre was established.
2006
NNI established the first 24-hour MRI service for acute stroke patients and was designated the International Centre of Excellence by Parkinson’s Foundation.
2007
The Community Care Partners Programme was launched, being Singapore’s first Parkinson’s Disease outreach programme.
2008
NNI and Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Orthopaedic Surgery collaborated for a Spine Service for the first time.
2009
NNI celebrated our 10th anniversary.
2011
Teleservices were introduced for timely assessment of stroke patients.
2012
The SingHealth Duke-NUS National Neuroscience Academic Clinical Programme and the first Advanced Practice Nurse Neuroscience Clinic were established.
2013
The NNI-SingHealth Polyclinics Cognitive Assessment and Rehabilitation (CARe) clinic was set up for early screening and diagnosis of dementia.
2014
The National Neuroscience Research Institute Singapore (NNRIS) with Duke-NUS Medical School was launched, and NNI was the Designated World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) International Training Centre for Young Neurosurgeons. NNI also won our first President’s Nurse Award.
2015
The NNI-Alzheimer’s Disease Association Esteem Programme was established to support young onset dementia patients.
2016
The NNI Centre of Excellence for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) was set up. NNI also developed the world’s first human mid-brain organoid.
2017
NNI organised our first Brain Awareness community roadshow and SingHealth President’s Challenge, raising a record amount of $615,000.
2018
NNI researchers received the President’s Science Award for groundbreaking Parkinson’s disease research. The Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice Programme was also launched.
2019
NNI celebrated our 20th Anniversary.
2020
The NNI Endovascular Centre and SingHealth Duke-NUS Memory & Cognitive Disorder Centre were established.
2021
The Stroke Buddy, Memory Care and Parkinson’s Care Specialty Care modules were launched on the SingHealth Health Buddy app.
2022
The ASEAN Microbiome Nutrition Centre (AMNC) and SingHealth Duke-NUS Spine Centre were established.
2023
NNI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Siriraj Hospital, Thailand, to advance neurovascular care in Singapore, Thailand and the region.
2024
NNI celebrates our 25th Anniversary.
